Diseases of the brain & central nervous system
Quality of life is secured for patients through non-invasive, precise radiotherapy.
Cyberknife® technology makes it possible to treat both benign and malignant, recurring brain tumors and metastases. Surrounding tissue is not affected. State-of-the-art technology can specifically stop the growth of tumors that are difficult to reach.
Areas of application

Acoustic neuroma
An acoustic neuroma is a benign tumor on the auditory and vestibular nerve, which can cause hearing loss, tinnitus, and balance disorders. Tumors are irradiated with the highest precision, while the facial nerve and hearing are protected as much as possible.

Meningiomas
These mostly benign tumors, which form in the meninges or spinal membranes and are sometimes life-threatening due to growth, can be stopped in over 95% of cases.

Trigeminal neuralgia
The sudden, severe facial pain caused by this nerve disease can often be effectively relieved and, in the ideal case, eliminated in a single 30-minute session.
Criteria for treatment with the Cyberknife®
- Suitable for patients with clearly defined, small tumors
- Treatment option for tumors in locations in the brain that are difficult to operate on
- Suitable for patients with residual tumors after surgery
- Effective for patients with brain metastases
Therapy process
The treatment is divided into preparation, irradiation, and aftercare; it is gentle and patient-friendly.
Preparation
Before treatment, an individual soft mesh mask is fitted. This stabilizes the head. CT and MRI image data define the exact size and location of the tumor. Radiation is thereby applied with pinpoint accuracy.
Radiation therapy
Treatment is performed on an outpatient basis, usually in a single session of about 15 to 25 minutes. The tumor is irradiated with sub-millimeter precision. Healthy tissue is thus protected to the maximum extent, and patients feel nothing.
Aftercare
Follow-up examinations are scheduled after the therapy. For malignant tumors, this occurs after three months, and for benign tumors, after six months.

Cyberknife® for brain metastases and arteriovenous malformations
The advantage over whole-brain radiation is clear. Using Cyberknife®, up to 20 brain metastases can be treated specifically in one session.
Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in the brain or spinal cord can also be effectively treated without surgical intervention.
Focus on meningiomas.
Sabine suffered an epileptic seizure due to a benign meningioma in the temporal lobe and sought a gentle treatment method. At Cyberknife® Salzburg, she was successfully treated by Dr. Alfred Haidenberger using precise, non-invasive radiotherapy – entirely without surgery or pain.
