Medical physics experts at Cyberknife® Salzburg guarantee highly complex diagnostic and treatment procedures, working hand in hand with radiosurgery expert Dr. Alfred Haidenberger.
“My field is interdisciplinary and applies physical principles to medical questions. Our planning CTs are carried out in close cooperation with the medical director and the radiology technologists. We follow the ALARA principle with our device. High-energy beams are directed into the target area of the tumors with a precision of less than one millimeter using a robotic arm; thus, we use state-of-the-art imaging to track the tumor in real time. Even if it moves, for example due to breathing, we focus the radiation precisely to protect healthy tissue as much as possible,” explains the Head Medical Physics Expert of Cyberknife® Salzburg in an interview.
Pioneering achievements as the foundation of modern medicine
The planning of a CT examination requires the six-eye principle to ensure that the individual steps are carried out closely and successfully.
- Indication: The medical question determines the choice of CT protocol (thorax, head, low-dose CT).
- Adjustment of parameters such as tube current, slice thickness, and scan area to the individual anatomy.
- Contrast medium administration: This requires a decision on its use, for example, in vascular imaging.
- Dose estimation. Use of dose management software.
- Quality control. Medical physics regularly checks all equipment to ensure image quality and radiation safety.
The medical achievement of the Cyberknife® system as a tool of modern tumor surgery thus owes its path, among other things, to the pioneering work of Madame Curie.
